MyMart™

Selling on MyMart™ from the web

Selling an item on MyMart™ from a computer is just as quick and easy. Go to the “Sell your stuff” page then follow the quick and easy steps.

Details

Title

First chose a title for the item that you selling. Make sure that your title contains some specific details about your item so that people can easily search for it. For example “30Gb white iPod with cover, 6 months old” is better than just “iPod.” Titles are limited to 200 characters.

Description

Then you need to write a description of your item. There is no limit to how long this can be so be as detailed as you like. Think of the information that you might want if you were buying your item. For example:

  • What size is it (include measurements)?
  • How old is it?
  • What condition is it in – be truthful, buyers like to know the bad as well as the good!
  • Are there any notable features?
  • Delivery details – will you post, will they collect?*

If you want to make your description look pretty you might like to know that you can use Textile to format your description. Textile is a simple way of formatting text, please see the Textile Reference for more information. HTML formatting does not work on MyMart™.

Condition

Choose the condition of your item from one of the four categories.

Price

The next page allows you to provide a price for your item. Items on MyMart can be sold in an auction or at a fixed price.

An auction lasts 7 days and people place bids in that time, the highest bidder at the end wins. To create an auction you need to specify a minimum price, which is the minimum amount you will accept. Think carefully about how much you want for your item – often items that begin on a lower minimum price sell for more in the end, but there is no guarantee!

A fixed price sale lasts until an item is sold. You choose a price and people will either take it or leave it. Just enter a fixed price and leave minimum price blank.

You may also specify a both a minimum and a fixed price. This creates an auction with the option for eager buyers to snap it the item there and then. The fixed price would be the most you really think the item is worth. Note that the auction may not reach that price and you are obliged to sell to the highest bidder.

Postage

Enter the amount for postage of your item to anywhere in the UK. This helps buyers to see the total cost of your item. If you are not sure how much postage will be, please see the Royal Mail’s price guide for more information.

Category

On the third page you choose a Category for your item. The category does not have to be exact, choose the one that is the closest match.

Pictures and videos

You can upload up to five pictures or videos of your item. These can be pictures taken with either a mobile phone or a digital camera. In both cases the pictures should already be saved somewhere on your computer, you find them by clicking the browse button. Locate the folder they are stored in, select a file and click open.

Picture and video formats

You should always upload at least one picture or video and these should be playable on mobile phones. Not all picture or video files can be viewed on mobile phones. If possible use the JPEG file format for pictures and the 3GPP format for videos. Files created by mobiles rarely use other file types. In addition these types can also be viewed by all computer-based web browsers. Pictures will be resized to 400 _ 300 pixels.

Being able to upload a video of your item is one of the unique benefits of using MyMart™ and we recommend it! Buyers like to know as much as possible about what they are buying and a video is a great way to let them get a good look. Think of it as your own shopping channel. You can practice your pitch and see how good a salesperson you really are.

To remove an item just click the “Close” button under it, confirm that this is what you want to do and your listing will be removed. We will send you a text message to confirm that this has happened. The item will remain in the “Selling” column, but its status will have changed to “Gone”.

What happens when I have sold something?

When you have sold something on MyMart™, either through an auction or through “Buy it now”, you will receive a text message to tell you. This message will include details of how to contact the buyer (name and phone number) and the buyer will receive a similar message with details of how to contact you (name and phone number). The page for the item will change to display these details and the steps you should go through. Arrange payment and delivery. When everything’s done, leave feedback about the buyer.

Payment

You and the buyer must arrange a payment method. Most sellers will not send an item until payment has been received.

There are several payment methods that MyMart™ recommend.

1. Luup

Luup allows you to send and receive money with your mobile phone. You can pay for things via SMS, while still keeping your MyMart™ money separate from your phone bill. With Luup you don’t have to enter your card details to make a purchase. To learn more and to sign up for a Luup account take a look at their website.

2. Internet payment services

Internet payment services such as Paypal or Nochex let you send money to anyone with an email address.

3. The old fashioned way

The buyer can send you a cheque. This is secure but takes a little longer as you should wait for the cheque to clear before sending the item.

4. Cash on collection

If the buyer is going to collect the item in person, cash on collection makes the most sense.

Delivery or collection

Next you will need to agree a delivery or collection method and cost. You can use the post office or any number of delivery companies for larger items. If you and the buyer are near to each other, collection can be quick and easy. Do be aware that not everybody on the internet is trustworthy. If you are worried, have some with you when the buyer arrives or meet in a public place rather than at your home.

Feedback

Last of all you can leave feedback on the buyer. Did you have a good experience, would you recommend them to other sellers? Don’t forget the buyer will also be leaving feedback on you, so be fair.

Online auctions work on a degree of trust and feedback allows other users to have confidence in what they are buying, so feedback is important. Please don’t just choose “Positive” or “Negative”, write a quick explanation or recommendation. If you have a particularly bad experience, please report the buyer to us directly.

Extending the time your listing is shown

If after seven days your item has not received any bids and has not been bought outright, it will be extended for another seven days automatically and free of charge!
